Academic Standing (Watch, Alert, and Dismissal or Transition)
It is the goal of the Kelley Undergraduate Program to engage early with students who are struggling academically and help match them to the resources and pathways that are best for their situation.
Good Academic Standing
A student is in good academic standing at the end of each term when the student meets all of the following criteria:
- A minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of a 2.000 (on a 4-point scale)
- A term GPA of 2.000
- Successful attempts at completing I-Core prerequisites (grades with a C* or higher)
Also see the IUB Policy on Academic Standing for Undergraduate Students.
Academic Watch
Goal: The goal of Academic Watch is to notify students of concerns about their academic performance and that they must seek support and address academic challenges to return to good academic standing. The student must address academic challenges to return to good standing. Academic Advisors can assist with the support services as needed. Academic Watch appears on the student’s advising record, but DOES NOT appear on the student's official record nor transcript.
Students will be placed on Academic Watch if they meet one or more of the below criteria:
- Term GPA between 2.000 and 1.000 but cumulative GPA above a 2.000
- First unsuccessful attempt at completing an I-Core prerequisite with a C* or higher
If the student also qualifies to be placed on Academic Alert, then the student is placed on Academic Alert instead of Academic Watch.
While there is currently no negative consequence for admitted Kelley students for being on Academic Watch, students should ensure they remain on track for their degree to avoid Academic Alert. Pre-Business students, please note that the criteria for going on Academic Watch and Academic Alert are considered risk factors for Kelley admission. Please see this page for more information about standard admission criteria and contact Kelley Admissions at bschool@iu.edu with questions.
Academic Alert
Goal: The goal of Academic Alert is to notify a student of major concerns about their academic performance and that they are at risk of Academic Dismissal. The student must seek increased support and address academic challenges to return to good academic standing. New Academic Alert students will be added to a Kelley Academic Success Canvas module and be required to meet with an Academic Advisor before you are permitted to register for the next term’s coursework. Academic Alert appears on the student’s advising record, but DOES NOT appear on the student's official record nor transcript.
Students will be placed on Academic Alert if they meet one or more of the below criteria:
- Cumulative GPA below a 2.000
- Second unsuccessful attempt at completing the same I-Core prerequisite with a C* or higher
- Term GPA below a 1.000
Students who meet the academic requirements of their Academic Alert term (i.e., term GPA at or above 2.500, successfully complete any I-Core prerequisite(s) that initiated the Alert, complete 12 credit hours) but whose cumulative GPA remains below a 2.000 will remain on Academic Alert until their cumulative GPA is at or above 2.000. Students with two unsuccessful attempts at completing the same I-Core prerequisite will remain on Academic Alert until the third successful attempt.
Note that Academic Alert status does not change if grade changes are made after the "transcripts available with official grades" date as noted on the IUB Official Academic Calendar.
Academic Unit Dismissal or Transition
A student on Academic Alert can be academically dismissed by the academic unit if the student does not return to good academic standing.
Goal: The goal of Academic Unit Dismissal is to assist struggling students to take a break from school or transition to another IU major. The period of dismissal from the academic unit is a time for students to reflect on their academic performance, set new goals, and move forward on a new path. Academic Unit Dismissal appears on the student’s advising record, but DOES NOT appear on the student's official record nor transcript.
Students are placed on Academic Unit Dismissal or Transition if their academic transcript reflects any of the following during their Academic Alert term:
- Term GPA of below a 2.500
- Third unsuccessful attempt at completing the same I-Core prerequisite with a C* or higher
- Not completing 12 credit hours
- If enrolled in fewer than 12 credit hours, not completing all enrolled credit hours
Students returning to their Kelley coursework after unit dismissal will remain on alert status until successful completion of I-Core. If a student has previously been on Unit Dismissal, Permanent Dismissal will result from:
- Any subsequent cumulative GPA below 2.000, with the term GPA below a 2.500
- Any term GPA below a 2.000
- Third unsuccessful attempt at completing the same I-Core prerequisite with a C* or higher
Note that Academic Unit Dismissal or Transition status does not change if grade changes are made after the "transcripts available with official grades" date as noted on the IUB Official Academic Calendar.
Students placed on Academic Unit Dismissal must either be away from the Indiana University system (including Bloomington and all regional IU campuses) for a minimum of one academic year or transition to another major within Indiana University.
If a student enrolls at any Indiana University campus during their one-year Academic Unit Dismissal period, they are changing their academic unit. When a student leaves the Academic Unit of Indiana University Bloomington Kelley School of Business, they are disqualified from ever returning to our program as a Kelley Business major.
*Grades of W, X, or I do not meet the C or better requirement.
